Motorized Scooters

Motorized scooters

Riding a scooter is a great way to get around campus. If you choose to ride a scooter, please remember that your scooter is a vehicle. Just like a motorist, it is your responsibility to learn and obey the rules that apply to you as a user.

Follow these campus guidelines

  • Photograph of a motorized scooterOperators must obey all rules of the road, including traffic signs and signals, and follow all applicable state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Reckless or negligent operation of personal conveyance vehicles on any part of campus is prohibited.
  • Operators must move at a safe speed and yield to pedestrians at all times.
  • Personal conveyance vehicles must never block pedestrian walkways of ADA access.
  • Bicycles and motorized scooters must have a working headlight and tail light from dusk to dawn.
  • The operation, parking, and storage of personal conveyance vehicles is prohibited in all interior building spaces; on all stairways, steps, ledges, benches, planting areas, any other fixtures; and in any other posted area unless authorized by INLOCC.
  • Personal conveyance vehicles that pose a hazard to public health and safety or that are parked or stored on university property in violation of this policy may be removed and impounded by campus officials. The owner of the personal conveyance vehicle is liable for all damages incurred, including the cost of cut locks and payment of fees to retrieve from impoundment.
  • Residents in Campus Housing Facilities are not permitted to use campus utilities to participate as paid "charging employees" for any business per RPS Policy.

Safety tips

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Use common sense; scooters are motorized vehicles, not toys.
  • Dress to be seen and do not operate at night.
  • Share the road and never ride against traffic.
  • Maintain a three-foot minimum distance from pedestrians.
  • Watch the road for uneven surfaces and debris.
  • Be wary of puddles and leaves that may hide in potholes.
  • Drive defensively.
  • Keep your eyes up and one ear free so you can see and hear what's happening around you.

The safety tips above are intended to increase safety while riding a motorized scooter; however, they are not intended to be an exhaustive list of safety precautions and do not guarantee operator safety. Be wise and conduct your own research on how to operate a scooter safely.
